Peninsula, the northernmost point (10 degrees
41' S) of the Australian mainland, named by
Captain James Cook in 1770. The peninsula is
about 800 km/500 mi long and 640 km/400 mi
wide at its junction with the mainland. Its
barrenness deterred early Dutch explorers,
although the S is being developed for cattle
(Brahmin type). In the N there are large
bauxite deposits.
